Today's families are very busy, too busy to take a vacation together with all family members or even just to take a short break.
However, routines and rituals, like family vacations, are important to the health and well-being of families. It's healthy to take a break from the daily demands of juggling work and home.

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that vacations are good for us as we will discover new places, to engage in activities we enjoy and even just to spend quality time with family to do pleasant things together. According to research conducted by the Family Holiday Association, nearly half of those surveyed said their happiest memory was on vacation with family. A quarter of respondents also said that they rely on those happy memories as a boost when times are tough.
"Reflecting on our happiest memories of joyful time spent together as a family can be extremely powerful in bringing relief and respite when faced with the darker times that life can bring," John McDonald, director of the Family Holiday Association. "By using these memories as an anchor to take us back to more cheerful moments, we're often able to approach problems with a fresh sense of perspective."
Many other studies suggest that a family vacation has a profound and lasting impact on kids’ overall happiness and well-being. Further it says that that experiential gifts (gifts of vacations or outings, for example) have a more profound impact on your children than material gifts.
Vacations can also play a part in brain development, explains child psychotherapist and Director of Education and Training at the Center For Child Mental Health, Margot Sunderland. Spending time playing on the beach isn’t just for fun in the sun, it’s also for “attachment play” which is important to bonding.
Spending time connecting not only raises self-esteem says Sunderland, it also advances development in two brain systems known as Play and Seeking. These systems are exercised whenever you spend time playing or exploring with your child. Family vacations activate these systems, triggering well-being neurochemicals like dopamine and oxytocin, which reduce stress and create a feeling of happiness. They can also cause brain growth and maturity in the frontal lobe, which controls things like social intelligence and goal-directed behavior.
What about the hassle traveling with kids? Well, I do understand this issue however, as my personal experiences, no matter how much of a hassle it seems to travel with kids, the amazing benefits and the lifelong memories far outweigh any downsides.
Traveling always helps our family reconnect in a way that nothing else does. When you take a vacation together, you become a team. You’re all suddenly part of a dynamic that relies and includes each family member. Indeed, researchers have found that family vacations can improve family communication and bonding.
During your family vacation, instead of rushing to get ready for school or to get another project done, you can simply relax and enjoy being with each other. While as a couple. you will be able to unplug and step into an experience far more relaxing and pleasing to the senses than the everyday hustle and bustle of our daily lives.
